The Land Beyond the Wall is set to be released December 1, 2017. This is an amazing story of how Veronika Martenova Charles left her country. The story is mixed in with her immigration tale of how she wound up in Halifax after her parents went missing. The challenges of not knowing a language, being alone and an orphan in a new place makes you see the plight of a refugee in a very different light. The book is beautifully illustrated and written. It is a book that all children should read so that they can understand the plights of the many children around the world who are alone, orphaned and just trying to find a new home away from the tyranny of their homeland.

The Tea Dragon Society is set to be released on October 31, 2017. This beautifully illustrated book is about a young girl who learns how to make tea from special leaves from a tea dragon. This children’s book is a great way to introduce children to tea and its healing properties. While reading this book, tea should be sipped. I learned a lot about tea in this book. I loved the magical characteristics Katie O’Neill brings to the story. Tea takes on a fairy tale like story as we learn the importance of the tradition. The book is beautifully done. For those who love animé, you’ll love how this book is illustrated.

Fashion Love
One of my favorite new finds. I searched everywhere for a satin jacket for two years. On a whim, I looked to see if Forever 21 had one and sure enough, this one popped up on their site. It is lightweight and very comfortable. The price is also sweet.

Forever 21’s BOGO Free Sale on Clearance Begins Friday
Hello Lovelies,

Why Forever 21?
Over the past couple of years Forever 21 has become my go to source for items I can’t find in the big department stores. When I was looking for maxi cardigans that go all the way to your ankles, no place had it. I stopped into Forever 21, just by chance, and they had it. Trust me when I say I stocked up.
I spent two years looking for a satin jacket. The search finally came to an end when I found one online at F21. It fit so well and looked gorgeous. I received so many compliments on it.
I am a stickler about quality. I find F21’s quality has improved over the years. I bought a couple of tops the last time I was in Las Vegas (2 or 3 years ago). They are still holding up very well.
Just recently, I was shopping around for the Miu Miu Lace Up Ballet Flats. I loved the style, but not the price. Something told me to check F21. I found the exact same shoe for around $20. [See post]
There are very few shops that are on my list of approved ‘low end’ stores. F21 made the cut just because they seem to have whatever obscure piece of fashion I dream up that I want to add to my closet, and it’s not crap. Each item I purchased has staying power. I love their shoes and jewelry, too. I also purchased a few handbags from them to add to my collection.
With all of the 4th of July sales coming up, this is one you will definitely need to shop, my dear fashionistas. Mark it down!

Fantasy Wardrobe: Gucci For Less
When I was in my early 20’s, fresh out of college, I worked for a political magazine. My boss was a sought after political consultant who was on TV all of the time. He introduced me into the world of the elite and society.
I love fashion. I bought books on how to dress for political society, as well as any event that could come my way. I picked up a part-time job in the Men’s Polo Ralph Lauren department and learned about clothes in a new way. I learned about quality.
I had a steady progression. I wore Ralph Lauren for years, then Kenneth Cole. In later years, it grew to BCBG Max Azria and Calvin Klein. As I reached my mid-30s, I switched to couture, thanks to a $2 Valentino dress I got at The Outnet clearance.
I still shop at The Gap, Ann Taylor, Forever 21, Loft and Banana Republic. But I also buy the investment pieces from the couture brands, because I know the pieces are going to last a very long time.
My weakness though are handbags. I have a collection. I started off with the designer labels (Kenneth Cole, etc.). Then I bought my first Valentino bag second hand. Next, I bought a Prada, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. I realized that I could build my couture handbag collection without spending thousands of dollars on brand new. I learned that if I want a brand new bag, I shop around because I might find it for a cheaper price elsewhere.
Today, I’m sharing Gucci finds under $1k. I paid $30 for my first vintage Gucci. It is a black leather handbag that I still own to this day. The girl didn’t know if it was real or not, but I looked at it closely and saw that it was indeed the real thing.
When you buy vintage or secondhand, you need to know how to spot a fake from the real, especially if it does not come with its own documentation. There are plenty of instructional guides out there on how to spot fakes from the real deal. Louis Vuitton is the only brand that is becoming more and more difficult to spot a fake from the real one. LV is the only brand I will not purchase secondhand unless it is direct from a licensed retailer (like Portero or Fashionphile).
If you are looking to invest in a couture handbag, here are a few rules: 1) Never, ever buy white. It gets dirty and discolors quickly. 2) When buying leather, make sure to buy it in a color that ages well. Black and Tan colors age very well as the wear progresses. 3) Try to avoid suede for the long run. It does not age well. 4) Go for functionality. Totes are usually the way to go. Go for leather or a material that wears well in the rain and is easy to clean off. The Louis Vuitton Neverfull is one of the most popular bags. Every major designer has their own version. This type of tote is the best investment for bags that pack a punch. 5) Buy a classic look, i.e. one that will last for years to come.

I recently added a Balenciaga Agneau bag to my purse collection. When I first moved to Manhattan, I saw these bags on the street and had to have one. I bought two before finding out they were Balenciaga knock offs. So of course, I had to buy the real thing. Ten years later, I remembered I wanted one, so I added one to my collection. It is one of my favorite new bags. It fits so much stuff! [The Real Real]

One of the most important books in decluttering your life. Marie Kondo may be a little obsessive with decluttering to the point she should probably seek help. But her obsession works to our benefit as we learn what works in managing our homes and offices better. It’s about finding joy. A must have in learning how to manage your home. [Amazon]
How to Stop Traffic Wearing Reds: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
I am stepping out of my comfort zone a lot lately, daring to wear red. In the past few months, I donned a red dress here and there and received many compliments.
These dresses are not necessarily dresses that show off my assets. They are just showstoppers because of the color. It literally stops people in their tracks, just like a stop light does. People take notice when they see red.
I wore this Kate Spade ensemble to the office this week. A lot of the ladies stopped to remark at how cool it looked. It was light and airy. The matching bag though is my favorite.
Before you think you cannot afford to spend $726 on an outfit like this, get it for $139 like I did through Rent the Runway Unlimited. You choose any three items out at any time for $139/month. It is perfect for those who love expensive clothing, have a constant rotating closet, or just want to be a minimalist. Or you can just buy it because you have to own it.
Personally, I own way too much clothing as is, but every now and again, I like the thought of having something new to wear. I usually wear an item once every season (because I have that many clothes). It’s nice that RTRU is around so I can minimize my closet and still have something fun to wear to work and out for the evening without adding to my closet.
Don’t be scared to wear red. Sometimes just trying it out will amaze you. If you’re afraid to make that bold of a statement, start small with a red accessory. Even a red jacket is a step in the right direction. Red has a misnomer of being a sexy color. It can also be a color of energy, strength, power, passion, love and desire. It can be all of those things or one of those things…it just depends on how you wear it.
Here are all of my favorite red fashion items. What is your favorite?

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo [Book Review]
If you are looking for a great summer read, pick up “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.”
There are very few authors that can transport you into a new world and make you feel like you are the actual character. In this instance, Reid places us in Evelyn Hugo‘s shoes and makes us feel like we are a famous Hollywood starlet during the golden age of Hollywood. We see and feel what it means to be a rich and famous actress over the last 60 years.
From the roles of her youth to the changing of roles as she grows older, we see the risks she takes to remain on top. What happens off screen is just as important to her success as what happens on screen.
The most unique part of Hugo’s story is seeing how a woman succeeds in Hollywood. A woman’s success depends on who she is married to. For Evelyn, she starts out marrying a man who gets her out of Hell’s Kitchen and into Hollywood. The men that follow help her star status skyrocket, all the while hiding her true love…the one she will never be able to marry.
The question that follows Evelyn in the end is which of her seven husbands did she love the most? The answer will surprise you.
The Story
Evelyn selects a young reporter named Monique to tell her story in an upcoming magazine article. Monique is an important character in this, having just come off of a breakup with her husband. She is lost and grieving when this opportunity pops up to cover this story.
Evelyn, though, invites Monique to do this story under false pretenses. Instead of a magazine cover story, she offers her the rights to a tell all book. There is a reason why she selects this young woman to confess all to. She is trying to tell her how their lives are intertwined without coming out and saying so in the beginning. We are left to judge in the end whether Evelyn is a good or evil person. and whether this opportunity she gave to Monique is a great chance at success in the end.
Thoughts
I received an advance copy from Simon & Schuster and fell in love with the story. I told the author everything I loved about her book while she signed another copy for me at the Book Expo. Ironically, if you are a Popsugar Must Have subscriber, this book is in the June boxes (which means I have three copies now).
Simply put, I love this book. Reid is masterful in her storytelling. There are very few artists that can paint a picture of someone so well that you feel like you are the character.
I felt like I was Evelyn Hugo, a Hollywood starlet wearing an emerald green dress at the Oscars. I felt her loves, mistakes and heartaches. I felt the pain she felt, and asked myself if I was in her shoes, would I do things the same way? The answer is yes.
After I turned the last page, I put the book down and realized that I took a little bit of Evelyn’s strength with me. She taught me how to succeed in life. That was the good I took from her story.
I always wondered if most of these marriages and relationships in Hollywood are staged to help people advance their careers. This little glimpse into Tinseltown is almost like an exposé into how things really work there (i.e. the answer is YES, some are staged, some are real).
Of all the books I’ve read so far this year, this one is by far one of my favorites. A must read for this summer. I plan on adding the autographed copy to my library and sharing the other two copies with my friends. It is such a great read. It will not disappoint those who love celebrities and the good old glamour of Hollywood.
